Guilty verdict over tackle that broke McKinnon's neck

Posted by Unknown on Wednesday, 2 April 2014

The NRL judiciary has suspended Melbourne Storm prop Jordan McLean for seven weeks for the tackle that left Newcastle back-rower Alex McKinnon with a devastating spinal injury. McKinnon remains in a Melbourne hospital in a serious but stable condition with a broken neck and facing the possibility of never being able to walk again. McLean's defence argued that the Knights youngster "unfortunately and unwittingly" contributed to his injury by "tucking his head into his chest" before hitting the ground. It argued that if McKinnon did not change his posture mid-tackle, "there is no way he would have landed on his head". But the prosecution argued the tackle was careless and McLean was largely to blame, with the judiciary needing less than 10 minutes to find the Storm prop guilty.
