A huge magnitude 8.2 earthquake in the Pacific Ocean off Chile has generated a two-metre tsunami.
The earthquake hit this morning at a depth of just 10 kilometres and was centred 86km north-west of Iquique in northern Chile.
Areas of Chile and neighbouring Peru are being evacuated and there are reports that roads have been blocked by landslides.
There is no serious damage to infrastructure or reports of victims following the earthquake, a government representative said.
A tsunami warning is in effect for Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Panama, and a tsunami watch extends to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and Honduras.
