Sunni fighters have seized a border post on the Iraq-Syria frontier, smashing a line drawn in 1932 by colonial powers and linking hundreds of miles of land they control in an effort to create an Islamic caliphate from the Mediterranean Sea to Iran.
Once border guards heard that militants led by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) had taken Al Qaim, on the Syrian border, they left their posts, sources said.
But a media adviser said the Iraqi army was still in control of Al Qaim.
The move comes as thousands of Shiite militia paraded weaponry through the streets of Baghdad's Sadr City and nearby Basra.
