New research shows mothers are losing around 60 per cent of their gross income when they return to work, with some keeping as little as $3.50 an hour.

The National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) says when the primary carer returns to work, their wages are impacted by the cost of childcare, loss of government benefits and increase in tax.

It found the average cost of childcare has jumped 150 per cent in the past decade, with some families paying up to $170 a day.
