Indonesia requests Australia's help to resolve Montara oil spill dispute

Indonesia is urging Australian Government intervention to resolve a dispute over a massive oil spill that is claimed to have devastated Indonesian coastal villages.

It has been more than five years since the Montara oil rig blew its wellhead, spilling millions of litres of crude into the Timor Sea.

Coastal communities in Indonesia have reported significant damage to their fish stocks and livelihoods, but they want a proper study into the impacts.

In a letter obtained by Lateline, the Indonesian government is now asking for Australia's help to make the company responsible, PTTEP Australasia, conduct a full scientific study and pave the way to compensation.
